Abstract: Yeast isolated from the landfill site soil, G.I.D.C., Vatva, Ahmedabad, was examined for its phenol degrading capacity. Morphological and physiological studies and a series of biochemical tests indicated the isolate to be S. cerevisiae. The phenol degrading capacity of the yeast was estimated by measuring the phenol disappearance rate by colorimetric method at 500nm absorbance. The isolated yeast could degrade 100 to 800mgL-1 phenol by 100 - 8.57% respectively in 77 hours. The abiotic loss being 4% of total phenol degradation, it was concluded that removal of phenol was almost due to degradation.
